The Fox Thermal Flow Meter Difference

Fox Thermal Mass Flowmeters

Fox Thermal flow meters use a constant temperature differential (ΔT)technology to measure air and gases' mass flow rate. The thermal mass flow sensor consists of two Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs). The sensor elements are constructed of a reference-grade platinum wire around ceramic mandrels inserted into a stainless steel or Hastelloy tubes.

Fox Thermal Flow Meter

The reference RTD measures the gas temperature. The heated element is kept at a constant temperature, and the instrument electronics measure the gas flow's cooling effect. The electrical power required to maintain a constant temperature differential is directly proportional to the process gas's mass flow rate. The microprocessor then linearizes this data to deliver a 4-20mA output signal.

PowerPro™ Sensor Technology

Used in Fox Thermal Models FT2A and FT3, the Fox Thermal PowerPro™ Sensor operates at a higher power level than other competitive thermal technologies, providing better response time and wider turndown. Compared to a typical Differential Pressure(DP) type flowmeter (see inset), thePowerPro™ sensor offers better low flow or low-end sensitivity. The PowerPro™ sensor also provides exceptional accuracy at high velocities - up to 60,000 SFPM air.

DDC-Sensor™ Technology

The Fox Thermal DDC-Sensor™ is a new state-of-the-art sensor technology used in the FT1, FT4A, and FT4X flow meters. The DDC-Sensor™ is a Direct DigitallyControlled sensor that is interfaced directly with the microprocessor for more accuracy, speed, and programmability. Like thePowerPro™ Sensor, the DDC-Sensor™accurately responds to changes in process variables (gas flow rate, pressure, and temperature), which are used by the microprocessor to determine mass flow rate, totalized flow, and temperature.

Fox Thermal Flow Meter

In addition to measuring flow, the DDC-Sensor™ provides a technology platform for calculating accurate gas correlations. The correlation algorithms allow the meter to be calibrated on a single gas in the factory while giving the user the ability to select other gases in the theGas-SelectX™ gas selection menus. These technologies provide an accurate, multigas-capable thermal mass flow measurement from the leader in accuracy and innovation in thermal mass flow measurement technology.

In Thermal Mass Flow Meter Selection, Fox Has the Advantage

Fox Thermal has the only thermal mass flow meter that comes with the award-winning DDC sensor. This rugged system is a digitally operated sensor that speeds processing by interfacing directly with electronics of the flow meter. The innovative digital sensor signal processing offers a technology framework for measuring gas correlations using GAS-SELECTX, a gas selection feature that enables users to select a particular gas composition in the field and press a button from gas menus. This feature also makes it unnecessary to send the flow meter back to the manufacturer when the gas composition changes. Fox is the only supplier to deliver this feature, without risking loss of accuracy.

Another way to configure the gas composition of the meter is by using the FT View app. You can download and install this free and intuitive app on your Desktop in a few minutes. If the flow meter is connected via the regular USB port, the program enables the user to easily customize meter settings to display data charts, run simulations, log data, and measure meter accuracy.

Designing a Combustion Air/Gas Pre‐Mix System for Red-Ray Infrared Process Burners

Infrared Process Burners

Industrial infrared heating applications are carried out with infrared (IR) emitters, either by converting electrical current (based on the resistance of the emitter) or by converting natural gas or propane to IR energy through combustion. The strength of the emitted infrared energy is a function of its material temperature and is inversely correlated with absolute temperature (hotter emitters equal to shorter wavelengths equal to higher infrared energy). Careful consideration must be given to the application load, the target size, IR wavelength and power of the emitter in order to function properly.

Industrial IR heating systems are widely used for a variety of industrial applications. The most common are in these areas; powder coating, drying, drum heating, hardening, preheating, curing, component testing, baking, sterilizing, and melting.

Red-Ray™ is a leading manufacturer and the inventor of gas-fired infrared burners. Pyronics® is a leading brand of ceramic infrared burners. Red-Ray™ and Pyronics® metal and ceramic infrared burners. Both brands are owned by Selas Heat Technology.

Selas Heat Technology publishes a very helpful document titled "Designing a Combustion Air/Gas Pre‐Mix System for Red‐Ray Infrared Process Burners" for technical reference when using Red-Ray™ burners.
